As we usher in the holiday season, we often invite others into our homes to celebrate and spend time together. An easy way to create a festive atmosphere is with a natural air freshener. There are several ways to do this; here, we highlight three simple options. Each one can be customized to suit your favorite scent blends.

1. Simmer Pots

Simmer pots help bring the season indoors. This recipe fills the house with a spice-filled aroma and a cozy vibe.

You Will Need

  • 1/4 cup whole roasted coffee beans
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 TB. whole cardamom pods
  • 4 star anise
  • 1 tsp. whole cloves
  • 1 tsp. pink peppercorns

To Make

Fill a small pot with 2–3 cups of water, and add the ingredients. Simmer uncovered over low heat. Make sure to keep an eye on the water level and add more as needed to avoid burning the pot. You can reheat the mixture for two to three days before discarding or composting.

2. Room Spray

There is nothing pleasant about a lingering aroma that the vent can’t eliminate quickly. This citrus-scented spray helps eliminate those unwanted odors from any room in the house.

You Will Need

  • Distilled water
  • 1 tsp. dish soap
  • 1 tsp. vodka
  • 30 drops citrus essential oils

To Make

Fill a small spray bottle two-thirds with distilled water. Add the dish soap, vodka, and the essential oils, as desired. Tighten the spray top, and swirl the mixture for 30 seconds before spraying.

3. Potpourri

This simple option uses a number of different ingredients. All you have to do is fill a jar or decorative bowl with dehydrated fruits and herbs, cinnamon sticks, or spices. It’ll add a lovely scent to your home as well as an eye-catching flourish.
