Throughout my life, I’ve been fortunate enough to share my love of plants with those around me. As a young, homeschooled girl, I fondly remember spending mornings in the flower and vegetable gardens with my mom, watering and looking for aphids on the rosebushes, with the sun kissing my shoulders. Though I have yet to be blessed with much outdoor space, I do what I can with what I have: indoor spots away from toddler hands, two balconies, and a small back patio with limited direct sun.

I am no stranger to the effects of the sun. During summer, I spend a good amount of time outside, either first thing in the morning or after dinner to avoid the hottest peaks, or while playing in some sort of water, whether in a pool or from a hose with my young kids. As a redhead with fair, sensitive skin, I have to be extra careful when out in the sun. It doesn’t take long for me to burn or suffer from heat exhaustion if I don’t properly take care of myself with hydration, skin protection, and knowing when I’ve had enough. Here are a few sunscreen recipes if you’ve been wondering how to make a natural version at home this summer.

As the days grow warmer, body scrubs become especially useful again. With our skin spending more time exposed to sun, garden soil, salt air, and sunscreen, scrubs can help soften dry patches while leaving the skin refreshed.
