There is one all-natural cleaning supply that seems to have the power to do it all: baking soda. It can cut through grease and grime, freshen drains, remove stains, and even deodorize the fridge and trash can — all while being great for the environment and your health. Here are 10 ways to naturally clean your home with baking soda!
1. Freshen Drains: Pour baking soda into the drain under hot running water
2. Degrime Oven: Make a paste of baking soda and salt with water or distilled white vinegar, apply, let sit for 12–24 hours, keeping it moist with an occasional spray of water, and wipe away. Turn on the oven to 100 degrees Fahrenheit for an hour to soften any lingering grime, and wipe clean after it’s cool to the touch.
3. Clean Stovetop: Make a paste of baking soda and warm water, apply to trouble areas, let sit for an hour, and wipe off.
4. Polish Stainless Steel: Sprinkle baking soda on a soft cloth, and buff the area. Rinse well after buffing.
5. Refresh Refrigerator: Make a paste of baking soda and dish soap, apply to stubborn spots with a sponge, and wipe clean with warm water.
6. Deodorize Front-Load Washer: Pour ½ cup of baking soda into the detergent section, and run a wash cycle with hot water.
7. Clean Toilet: Sprinkle 1 cup of baking soda into the toilet bowl, let sit for 30 minutes, and spray with distilled white vinegar. Scrub toilet, and flush.
8. Scrub Grout: Mix together baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and dish soap as seen on page 86, apply to the grout, wait 5–10 minutes, scrub, and rinse.
9. Deodorize Trash: Sprinkle baking soda directly on the bottom of the trash can, or make tablets as seen on page 52 and place at the bottom of the can.
10. Remove Carpet Stains: Sprinkle baking soda on the stain, let sit for 5–10 minutes, and vacuum it up. Mix 1 cup of warm water with 1 tablespoon of distilled white vinegar, blot the stain, and allow to air dry.
